1. Butterflies. This is my favorite theme of all because I love butterflies and have a huge whole of butterfly stamps in all shapes and sizes. It's easy to make for real striking butterfly embellishments by stamping onto paper and cutting out the result, then coloring with sukura embossing glaze pens and adding a slight glitter. You can make a lovely background by stamping butterflies onto background card, but my favorite is a background paper with one or two large flowers. I can position my pictures on vellum mattes and then add one or two butterflies perched on the flower petals. It's easy to make the butterflies tone with the colors in your photographs, never forget that the pictures are the most foremost part of the layout. Don't be carried away with the enthusiasm or theme, if it doesn't make the pictures look good, forget it.

2. Fruit. A marvelous theme which is full of color and great if you haven't for real gone away for a summer holiday. select from a straightforward black or white page decorated with photographs and accented with intriguing fruit stickers, or a intriguing fruit themed background paper with pictures mounted on rectangles of velum to provide some contrast. Huge fruit or vegetable die cuts are easy to find, oranges and apples make great mattes for photographs, or you can simply decorate photo frames with small fruit themed stickers. 3. Indiana Jones. Give your pages a 20's or 30's look. Decorate with travel themed items or aged artifacts of mystical origin. This is a marvelous theme if you traveled to somewhere historic, or maybe you've caught some pictures of the kids 'pretending' as they peruse far off lands? If you can't find a themed background paper go seeing for favorable rubber stamps. Start out with some off white, cream or ivory card and some distress ink in dark red or brown, though black will just about do. One of the most efficient stamps to use is one of a post mark or a post card. Stamp all over the background just to give some interest. If you can find leather look paper, that makes a great border for this type of page. Buy one sheet and divide into thirds. One fills the lowest third of your left page and one the lowest third of your right page. The last third can be folded in half and used to provide a matte of journaling tags. Add a map of your journey. If your pictures are of the kids playing in your garden, get them to make a map and add it to your page. This is a very masculine layout so make sure your pictures are quadrilateral or rectangular and if you can add some accents, an Indiana Jones style hat or whip would be ideal. You can often find that sort of thing surrounded by Wild West themed stickers.

4. Flying. For most of us an airplane is primary when traveling any distance. Why not have a 'flying' layout at the start of your vacation scrapbook? It's easy to use a pale blue background and add white fluffy clouds cut from paper or card, but there are some marvelous 'flight' themed papers around. If your pictures are old, an aged style with bi-planes and airships would look for real good. If you are good at art, why not draw an airplane and use tiny pictures from your vacation to fill in the windows, or use some of the large size die cuts that are available. The easiest flying theme is to generate a hot air balloon shape by cutting it out from card and then attaching it with drawn in ropes to your feature photograph. Add some tiny stamped birds and maybe that die cut rainbow you bought but could never find anywhere to use and then some suitable stamped words, or a quote from The Lord of the Rings. 'Fly you Fools' might seem appropriate.

5. Flowers. An ideal theme for lovely oval portraits. Pick a flower, possibly a violet or a daisy and use that as the central item in a theme.

For violets select a pale lilac paper and make it more intriguing with smudges of violet chalk or distress ink. Tear the lilac page about two thirds of the way along and stick it down onto deep violet card so that only 1 vertical third of the page is deep violet. You can use the other 1/3rd of your lilac paper to generate a vertical border on the facing page. Add a deep green ribbon running horizontally over the page approximately 1/3 of the way up. Take your oval portraits and embellish them with tiny flowers, you can make these for real by using a small stamp, cut them out, color them with something like sakura embossing glaze pens and add some crystal glitter, then dot them nearby to generate a lovely frame for your picture, or you might use a flower shaped punch or even die cuts to the same effect. If your flower selection is a daisy, the course is the same, but use white paper (preferably with a texture or white pattern) and add this to intriguing yellow card. Again a dark green ribbon will unblemished the color scheme. Of course you may be able to find themed papers to do all this for you, but it's useful to know how to administrate if not. You can desist the whole thing with a white oval tag. Write your journaling on the tag and then stick it to an additional one slightly larger oval of your background color (yellow or deep purple) retention the left edge of the two ovals together. Again a green ribbon will unblemished a fresh and pretty summer layout.
